Description
The studio journey, the whole of it. The creative work, the business decisions behind it, and the act of putting myself out there and building an audience from nothing. Systems, standards, learning to sell, learning to be on camera, how a studio this small competes with agencies ten times its size. This is also where the "how this content gets made" meta-content lives, and where dyslexia (the thread, not a pillar) surfaces as the personal origin beat.
Where Behind the Screen reviews other people's work, Building By Default shows mine being built.
The breakdown
The repeatable structure (every episode):
- The moment. Present tense, in motion. "Here's what I'm working on / wrestling with this week."
- The system. Show the workflow, framework, or decision underneath. How the thing actually gets done.
- The standard. Why this is how a small studio delivers at a big-agency level.
- The honest line. Vulnerable about the journey, certain about the work. One screenshotable sentence.
The one rule: vulnerable about the journey, certain about the work. Public is the camera journey, the systems, the non-financial founder lessons, the anonymised rescue stories. Private stays private: money, pricing anxiety, anything that reads as "this founder is struggling".
What to avoid:
- The private line. No money, no pricing anxiety, no "I'm struggling".
- Drifting into reviewing others (that's Behind the Screen).
- Polish paralysis. Show the seams, shipping is the job.
Material it absorbs
- The Brand Operating System - documenting the systems and standards live. A theme inside this series, not a separate one.
- Tales from the Rescue - anonymised war stories, told as proof of how you think under pressure.
- The socials journey - why I'm finally posting, learning to be on camera, on camera. Native here now that the pillar is Building a Studio.
Episode seeds
- "How does a studio this small produce at this standard?" Answer: systems. Show one.
- A real client workflow, documented live (anonymised specifics, named brands as credibility).
- Learning to sell as a craft (the process, never the money).
- Why I'm finally putting myself out there, and what building an audience is teaching me.
- The production system behind this very content, as proof of the thesis.
- Interactive Branding: building an editable brand asset that exports the correct treatment (one-off, could also sit in Behind the Screen).
