Hook

  • Okay, so literally everyone is locked into the World Cup right now, right? But the BBC just launched something wild, and I don’t think anyone’s talking about it enough!
  • They turned the World Cup from something you watch into something you actually play with. They’ve changed the whole game, and people have no idea how big this is yet.

Credential

Quick bit about me: I run a studio called By Default, and for 15 years we’ve been building interactive experiences for brands and publishers.

So when something like this drops, I kinda geek out and break down how and why they've done it.

Body

I’m not even talking about their usual match coverage. They’ve dropped this insane 3D experience for every match!

You can literally rewind any moment from any angle you want. Want to see Messi do his magic? Zoom in and watch him dance around defenders.

Or jump into Bellingham’s shoes and see exactly how he set up Kane’s header. It’s mad.

I LOVE when companies totally flip the script on how we experience digital content.

And what’s even better? This isn’t just another thing that goes viral on a feed, and nothing comes of it.

And this is the thing to shout about. Designed participation.

Most brands make content for the feed; it gets the video views, but it's forgotten by the end of the day.

They didn’t just make content.

They built a whole destination, not just another post lost in the scroll.

Now I’ve heard they’ve got more ideas coming (fingers crossed this hits the Premier League soon).

Here’s what I’d LOVE to see next:

Imagine if there was a way for fans to jump in as commentators and analysts.

Like actually break down the action with real stats and show off what they noticed.

It could be where the next generation of coaches and pundits get discovered.

Or where creators get to flex and show everyone who’s legit, and who’s not!

So what does this mean for other sports like basketball, tennis, golf?

This is the stuff that gets me hyped.

We’re about to experience our favourite sports in a way we’ve never seen before.

The future of World Cup content

Caption

The best content at this World Cup for me has to be the BBC's 3D Experience.

They've basically rebuilt every match they show as a full 3D experience. You get to pick the camera, rewind any goal, and watch it from whatever angle you want. I call this 'designed participation.'

The interesting part for me is what they should do next.

I think they should build a way for fans and creators to get involved as the commentators and analysts. They read the game, showing their own breakdowns.

Something like that could totally change how we all watch sports.

That's just what I'm thinking; what do you think?
